The residents of Makoko water front community were forcefully evicted and their homes demolished by the Lagos State Government. According to Governor Fashola erection of illegal shanties at the water front would affect the natural drainage of the state which is the lagoon. He also said illegal immigrants were residing amongst the people . The eviction notice was delivered to the people on the 13th of July and they were given 72-hours to vacate the area. The first phase of demolition was on the 16th of July 2012 and a community was killed in the process.
